Kratom is a plant native to Southeast Asia. There it has been safely used as a folk medicine and recreationally. Kratom is cousins to the coffee plant by way of the Rubiacea family. In Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and elsewhere people used kratom. Kratom is still used there for its medicinal and social benefits.
Kratom is from many places in Southeast Asia. Most kratom comes from Indonesia currently. Deep growth forests in Kalimantan, Sumatra, Borneo and Bali boast centuries of usage.
There are a variety of ways to use kratom. Some brew it like a tea or stuff capsules to swallow. “Toss and wash” is a common method. You can take a spoonful and wash it down with water, juice, soda or some other drink. Tinctures, capsules, powder and high crystalline extracts are also popular.
Kratom dosage depends on the person, individual biochemistry and tolerance level are factors. For some folks who are sensitive to the components as little as a half a gram to a gram or so may be enough for a dose. Others use two or more grams per doses several times a day. Check instructions when using tinctures, extracts and other concentrated forms.
Too much kratom can cause upset stomach, vomiting or other unpleasant side effects. If you’re new to kratom it’s always best to take small amounts first. Try this and see how it affects you. You can always adjust your dosage later if you don’t experience the desired effects.
What are kratom’s effects?
Kratom has various potential effects. This is due to the different types. Color combinations, region and vein color are primary means of categorizing kratom. In general smaller amounts are more energizing and stimulating. Larger amounts tend to be more relaxing or euphoric.
Vein color and region are the main way to differentiate kratom strains. Red veins are more relaxing and euphoric. White veins are often more energizing and mood-lifting. Green vein is a balance between the two and tend to have higher antioxidant potency. “Gold vein” kratom refers to a method of processing rather than the color of the vein in the leaf itself. Fermentation results in Gold vein and Bentuangie. This causes a higher quantity of 7-hydroxy-mitragynine. Gold vein results in a supremely relaxing, potent and euphoric kratom experience.
Can kratom cause tolerance or withdrawal?
Like it’s cousin coffee you can build up a tolerance if you use it daily and increase the amounts that you use. Former pharmacologist of the National Institute of Drug Abuse Dr. Jack Henningfield has described “withdrawal” from kratom. Main side effects are headache and runny nose.
Kratom is legal in all US states except 6 (Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Vermont).
Most brick and mortar stores don’t carry kratom. The few places that do, like certain head shops, often overcharge. Some unscrupulous head shop dealers selling kratom are accused of selling adulterated products. There are many places online to buy kratom. It’s best, however, to use a vetted vendor. Testing and following FDA regulations and current good Manufacturing Process are especially important.
